India are favoured to lift the World Cup on home soil, as in 2011. But that expectation may be their biggest obstacle.

On the face of it, Sri Lanka have a sturdy side and a winning record in recent matches. But many of those wins were against lesser opposition after the Sri Lankans were forced to qualify - a process that eliminated West Indies - and in the recent Asia Cup final, Dasun Shanaka’s team were razed for 50 by India’s pace bowlers.

Wins over Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, plus a pair of narrow losses to Pakistan and Sri Lanka, have demonstrated that in 2023 Afghanistan will not be easy to overcome in south Asian conditions. As ever, Rashid Khan’s genius with the ball will be at the centre of their challenge, although recently there has been evidence he might be defending some reasonable totals due to the 21-year-old Ibrahim Zadran at the top of the order.
