Inflation has surged to 5.1 per cent year-on-year, the highest levels since the introduction of the GST in 2000.The most significant contributors to the rise in inflation include new dwellings, fuel and tertiary education.Consumer prices jumped by 2.1 per cent through the first three months of the year, taking annual inflation to its highest level in more than 20 years.
Head of prices statistics at the ABS, Michelle Marquardt, said the most significant contributors to the rise in consumer prices were new dwellings , fuel and tertiary education . “Annual price inflation for automotive fuel was the highest since the 1990 Iraqi invasion of Kuwait.”
