Pride groups in Australia allege that Meta, Facebook's parent company, has removed posts from multiple LGBTQIA+ pages without clear explanation. While Meta attributed some deletions to a 'technical error', other removals remain unaddressed, leaving groups feeling silenced. Removed content included information on counselling services, TransDay events, and community news, raising concerns about censorship and platform bias.
Pride groups say social media giant Meta has deleted posts across multiple LGBTQIA+ pages without due cause.
OutInPerth, an online publication covering local, national and international LGBTQIA+ news, also had multiple posts removed in November. OUT South West co-chair Lisa McBeth said the group had shared counselling services on offer from QLife Australia and Living Proud WA."To say it was concerning would be an understatement, because it felt like the community was getting shut down a little bit," Ms McBeth said.
Tauel Harper, a social media expert and professor of communication from Murdoch University, said the posts could have been automatically removed for a number of reasons."There's every possibility this could have been a malicious attack of people reporting the group, but broader than that, there's an issue that these social media companies don't always police these reports very efficiently," Dr Harper said.
ABCQueer has compiled this list of national and state-based support services relevant to LGBTQI+ people, their families and friends.
