Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese got a rapturous reception when they arrived at the packed Qudos Bank Arena.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi got a rock star reception at Sydney Olympic Park on Tuesday night as he praised Indian-born Australians for helping to build mutual trust and respect between his country and Australia.
Ties between India and Australia have improved rapidly during the past decade, and last year the two signed a landmark trade liberalisation deal. Modi joked that he had heard there were “very delicious” sweets in the Harris Park area. “I want you all to take my friend Australian PM Albanese to that place,” he said.Modi also referred to the sorrow felt in India after the death of Australian cricket legend Shane Warne last year. “Hundreds of Indians were also mourning. We felt like we have lost someone very close to us,” he said.
“We love Mr Modi a lot,” said Rutvija Baxi, from Oran Park in Sydney’s west. “He has brought India to the highest level.”Before the event the crowd was entertained by Bollywood-style dancing and drummers. There were frequent chants of: “Modi, Modi, Modi.” The 2021 census identified more than 670,000 people in Australia who were born in India. The Indian diaspora is forecast to number well over 1 million by 2035.
