As a NATO partner, Australia was reportedly expected to attend the event as senior officials of the organisation have warned about a new regional threat. Australia, South Korea, New Zealand and Japan were all officially invited to the 75th anniversary Washington Summit. “It is somewhat disappointing because this gathering of leaders will hopefully send a message that the world’s leading democracies are united,” the anonymous diplomat in Brussels said.
