Umar Patek, 52, is due to walk free from Porong prison within days after being granted an early release as part of Indonesia's Independence Day. "We will continue to make those representations diplomatically in order to serve Australia's national interest," he said. "I know that this continues representations made by the former government when the initial reductions in the sentence were given to this person who, I think, is abhorrent. "His actions were the actions of a terrorist. They did have such dreadful results for Australian families that are ongoing, the trauma which is there."The suicide bombings on October 12, 2002 killed 202 people, including 88 Australians.

At trial, Patek was accused of assembling the explosives that ripped through Bali's Sari Club and Paddy's Irish Bar.
