The new King, and Queen Consort Camilla, will remain at Balmoral tonight before returning to London tomorrow
Prince Charles has now taken on the role of King following the tragic death of Queen Elizabeth aged 96. His accession to the throne came immediately after the death of his mother at Balmoral this afternoon.
But there must be a formal proclamation of him as the new monarch at an Accession Council in St James’s Palace in London as soon as practically possible. The Council is usually convened the day after the death of a sovereign. It is formed of two parts. Amid great ceremony, trumpeters usually play a fanfare from the balcony and gun salutes are fired in Hyde Park and at the Tower of London. The proclamation will then be read at the Royal Exchange in the City of London.
The new King’s coronation is not likely to take place for many months and will involve much detailed planning. Codenamed Operation Golden Orb, the service in Westminster Abbey is expected to be shorter, cheaper and more inclusive of multi-faith Britain. But in a message to the nation on the eve of her Platinum Jubilee year, the Queen said: "When, in the fullness of time, my son Charles becomes King, I know you will give him and his wife Camilla the same support that you have given me. And it is my sincere wish that, when that time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal service."
