The Metropolitan police have requested transcripts of pre-trial hearings in Prince Harry's phone-hacking case against Rupert Murdoch's newspaper empire, The Guardian reports. This development comes following NGN's admission of unlawful activities by private investigators working for The Sun and amid renewed calls for a criminal investigation into allegations of 'perjury and cover-ups.'

The Metropolitan police have requested transcripts of pre-trial hearings in Prince Harry's phone-hacking case against Rupert Murdoch 's newspaper empire, according to a report by The Guardian. This development comes amid renewed calls for a criminal investigation into allegations of 'perjury and cover-ups' against News Group Newspapers (NGN).

Just 14 minutes before the trial was scheduled to commence, Murdoch's newspaper company offered substantial damages and an apology to Harry and Tom Watson, the former deputy leader of the Labour party, who was a co-claimant. NGN admitted to 'incidents of unlawful activities carried out by private investigators working for The Sun,' marking the first time the company acknowledged illegality beyond its now-defunct News of the World. While NGN continues to deny phone hacking occurred at The Sun or that its journalists were involved in any criminal activity, the admission raises hopes among press intrusion campaigners. On Wednesday, outside the court, claimants' barrister David Sherborne argued that the disclosures made by NGN during the five-year duration of the case provided grounds for a fresh police investigation into 'perjury and cover-ups.' Lord Watson stated his intention to submit a dossier of evidence to the Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Sir Mark Rowley. Sources close to Harry and Watson claim the evidence of criminality by NGN executives is 'almost incontrovertible,' a claim strongly refuted by the company. The Guardian understands that the Met has been monitoring the civil case and formally requested transcripts of all crucial pre-trial hearings where evidence was discussed. The Guardian also reports that last year, former Prime Minister Gordon Brown joined the calls for a new police investigation regarding claims that Will Lewis, the current CEO of the Washington Post, oversaw the deliberate destruction of emails at Murdoch's UK newspaper business 14 years ago. Disclosures in the High Court revealed a minute of a 2011 meeting between the police and Lewis, who was the newspaper company's general manager at the time, regarding a complaint by Brown about the mass deletion of emails belonging to senior executives at Murdoch's newspaper company during ongoing police investigations into illegality within the company.Lewis justified some email deletions by accusing Brown of 'controlling' a plot with Watson to obtain Brooks' emails through a third party. As part of the settlement on Wednesday, NGN acknowledged that this information was false and that Lord Watson did not receive any confidential information. NGN issued a full and unequivocal apology. Chris Huhne, the former cabinet minister who settled a phone-hacking case with NGN in 2023, also wrote to the Met police demanding a further investigation, questioning the company's previous sworn statements under oath at the Leveson Inquiry regarding the absence of criminal activity
