In 1978 the American intellectual egghead Susan Sontag published an influential book ‘Illness as Metaphor’ in which she deplored the way that cancer - the plague of our age - is used to define the one in every two of us who contract the disease, leading to a culture of victim blaming.

Prince Harry's relationship with the royals has perhaps never been more strained following the ill-timed release of his Netflix polo trailer that promotes the upper crust antics of the Duke and his hooray Henry friends, writes Nigel Jones. I doubt that Britain’s Royal family are avid readers of Sontag, but both King Charles and his daughter in law Kate, the Princess of Wales, have definitely been defined by the cancers that both are suffering from after they were more or less simultaneously diagnosed with the dread disease at the end of last year.
Since then, both have dropped the public part of their royal duties while they undergo treatment for their cancers.Although neither have revealed the exact type of cancer that they are suffering from, we now know that Kate has been undergoing chemotherapy, thanks to an extraordinarily intimate video that she has released in which she describes her battle with the disease, discloses that she is now"cancer free", and hopes to remain that way.
