The IPP sentences were abolished in 2012 but John Winchcole 'did not have any idea how long he might remain in prison'

The type of sentence a prisoner was serving 'may have played some part' in his decision to take his own life, a watchdog has said after an investigation.

A week-long inquest into his death concluded at Bolton Coroners' Court last month, where a jury ruled he took his own life. Following the inquest, a report was published today by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman , which investigates deaths in custody. Jurors heard he told prison told staff escorting him to Forest Bank on May 26 that he was going to take his own life. The inquest heard a process called ACCT, which stands for assessment, care in custody and teamwork, which 'seeks to support prisoners who might be at risk of suicide or self-harm' was initiated. He was said to have 'a low mood because of the possibility of a long sentence'.

The inquest heard Mr Winchcole may also have been concerned over bullying and his finances, and the report said that on August 24, the Parole Board wrote to him and told him he wasn't going to be released at that stage. An HMP Forest Bank spokesperson said after the inquest: "Our thoughts and condolences remain with Mr. Winchcole's family. Following the close of the inquest, we will review the jury’s conclusions with great care and continue to build on progress made."
