Carlyle has a secret weapon for training its top leaders: a four-star Navy Admiral who led thousands of sailors into battle and captured cocaine-filled cartel submarines
In 2021, Stavridis became the vice chair of global affairsone of the largest financial institutions in the world. Now, he's leading a new training course for the firm's partners called the Admiral Leadership Program. It's Carlyle's first internal training course for its top ranks, and it aims to take advantage of Stavridis' expertise to level up its top managers.
In 2006 he became Commander of the US Southern Command, responsible for all security and defense missions in Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. But he retired from the Navy about three years later to take on an even bigger mission — leading about 160,000 US servicemen as the Supreme Allied Commander of NATO in Europe.
"Regardless of whether you're a four-star admiral or a technology investor like I am, I've learned that what it means to be a great leader transcends industry," said Tye."And for me personally, it's increasingly clear that what it means to be a great investor and a great leader are two different things."
"Sometimes people think it's all going to be perfect, like eight guys rowing an Olympic person boat, every stroke is the same. But that's not what collaboration looks like," Stavridis said. "People are surging and backing up and drafting on each other and cooperating and competing. And people fall down and they get back in," he said."Collaboration can be very messy, and I learned that in the military.
