Principals at some Sydney schools have total pay packages eclipsing the earnings of university vice chancellors, with at least five collecting bonuses of almost $100,000 each.
The pay packets of elite high school principals have risen to a point where they are sometimes higher than university vice-chancellors.
Almost 20 schools participated in the 2021 report, including Abbotsleigh, Ascham, Barker College, Cranbrook, Kambala, Knox Grammar, MLC School, Moriah College, Newington College, PLC Sydney, Queenwood, Ravenswood, SCEGGS Darlinghurst, Shore, St Catherine’s, Scots College and Frensham.On average, the total pay of the top private school head was about $687,000, but when including housing it increased to $816,000.
Sydney private schools Kambala, SCEGGS Darlinghurst and The Scots College charged the highest fees in 2023.Many of the schools listed, which had an average of about 1500 students and 170 staff, hiked fees between 3 and 7 per cent this year after a total. At Kambala and SCEGGS Darlinghurst, the charges for year 12 students broke through the $45,000 mark.
“Boards are responsible and accountable for recruiting and remunerating principals commensurate with the size and scope of the school.”
