The latest Ofqual figures show the attainment gap in GCSE results between private and state schools in England has widened

that some independent schools are expecting “drastically lower” numbers in September with headteachers “worried about how many children will be able to return into sixth form”.

But the gap between private and comprehensive schools has narrowed compared to 2019 – when it was 29.3 percentage points. He said: “Some parents may withdraw their children from independent schools and seek places in the state sector as a result of the planned VAT levy on fees, but it is difficult to know how many students will be affected at this stage.

She added: “I’ve got peers whose numbers are drastically lower and everybody’s worried about today with how many children will be able to return into sixth form.”that he expects around 10 per cent of students to leave the independent sector and this figure is likely to be reflected at his institution.

But a Government spokesperson disagreed, saying: “This change will not have a significant impact on the state sector, and we do not expect significant numbers of pupils to move to the state sector part way through the academic year.”
