A 94-foot luxury yacht grounded near a marine sanctuary in Hawaii on Monday, leaking fuel into the ocean, the Department of Land and Natural Resources said.
DLNR said initiatives to remove the boat have been developed through communication between its department, Maui Police Department, Maui County, local government officials and the Save Honolua Coalition. Multiple divisions of DLNR are investigating the circumstances that led the yacht to be grounded in the Honolua Bay area, which could lead to additional citations and fines for the yacht owner, the department said.
Maui County issued an emergency permit Tuesday to assist in the boat’s removal after initial attempts to remove the yacht at high tide failed, county officialsThe permit allows equipment to be used at the shoreline to help move the boat from the reef and reach deeper water in order to be pulled out of the area.
The expedited process comes after growing concerns from the community, Maui Mayor Richard Bissen Jr. said in a Tuesday“I understand that this is under the jurisdiction of State and Federal agencies and I’ve been assured that their efforts are being done urgently,” he said. “I’ve assigned senior staff to carefully monitor the situation and offer support when appropriate.”
