The pro-Palestinian protests have drawn students and faculty of various backgrounds, including of Jewish and Muslim faiths. In her statement, Dr Shafik said the Middle East conflict was terrible and that she understood that many were experiencing deep moral distress. "These tensions have been exploited and amplified by individuals who are not affiliated with Columbia who have come to campus to pursue their own agendas," said Dr Shafik, who last week testified before a US House of Representatives committee, defending the school's response to alleged anti-Semitism by protesters.
