The axe that is ABC’s latest redundancy round has fallen swiftly. And one of those in the firing line has been ABC political editor Andrew Probyn.
Probyn’s redundancy has Press Gallery colleagues wondering whether the ABC thinks it can do without a political editor guiding coverage and mentoring younger reporters. It would be a novel approach, not least at a broadcaster whose political coverage is subject to so much scrutiny.
The departure of Probyn — and his producer — comes as part of a broader cost-cutting program that is expected to affect dozens more people. ABC managing directorwhen he announced a restructure carving the organisation into two divisions, one for news and the other for ‘content’.
