The answer is yes, and no. Here’s why

One thing from the home that can’t go in to the compost: produce stickers, those little plastic info-tabs that have a bar code or numerical sequence backed by a sticky substance holding them to your apple or zucchini. Leaving them on your banana peel for compost pickup is not encouraged. Nor is eating them, whether out of carelessness or wilfulness. And though the stickers are not toxic if eaten, they offer about as much flavour and nutritional value as the plastic wrap on your English cucumber.

In general, PLU labels placed on fruits and vegetables are not edible unless stated otherwise. Health Canada’s Food Directorate said in an email that it “is of the opinion that accidental ingestion of such a label would not be likely to pose a health problem. Though the stickers consist of adhesive, plastic or paper, and ink, they are required to be food grade — but that’s not the same as being compostable.that every time you forget to remove the label before tossing your banana peel, avocado skin or orange peel in your countertop compost bin, those stray stickers contaminate the compost — whether your own or your municipality’s — with tiny microplastics that, in turn, contaminate the soil where that batch of compost gets dropped.

The tiny tabs may be exempt if no viable alternative exists that can serve the same function or if the regulators receive specifications for acceptable alternative material for them. At this time, the stickers have not been earmarked for a ban but may be subject to further study. The, an umbrella group that includes the International Fresh Produce Association, in conjunction with the USDA and other industry groups, is looking into developing PLU stickers that can be composted at home.
