'To my big brother Josh. My heart breaks that we are without my protector, my mate.'

The parents of policeman Josh Prestney, who was killed in Wednesday night's Eastern Freeway tragedy, say their proudest moment was seeing their son, "protector" and "best mate" Josh graduate from the academy in December last year and join his younger brother Alex in the force.

His parents Andrew and Belinda have written of their joy at seeing Josh graduate from the Victoria Police Academy, having followed in his brother Alex's footsteps."The proudest moment of our lives was when Alex presented Josh with his badge at the graduation ceremony," Andrew and Belinda Prestney wrote. "Josh found his calling with Victoria Police."Josh and Alex were only 18 months apart in age and grew up doing everything together.

Josh's parents said he was also passionate about bikes and their mechanics, the Collingwood Football Club, basketball, triathlons and rock and metal music."In 1991 a bright light came into our world in the form of our beautiful son Joshua. For his dad, a best mate, for his mum, a protector and someone who never ceased to make us smile," they wrote."From the start he was a creative, insightful, loving and genuine soul.
