Footage shared on social media showed vehicles burning and riot police gathering along several streets late on Tuesday evening local time. The officer who fired the shot was detained on suspicion of manslaughter and is now being investigated for homicide, the prosecutor's office confirmed.In a statement, the lawyers rejected a reported statement by the police that officers' lives were in danger because the driver had threatened to run them over.It shows two police officers leaning into the driver-side window of a yellow car, before the vehicle pulls away and one officer fires toward the driver.
A Reuters tally of fatal shootings in 2021 and 2022 shows the majority of victims were black or of Arabic origin.
