Thousands of protests have taken place in 32 cities across Russia just hours after President Vladimir Putin announced a partial mobilisation of the nation's military, signifying a major escalation of the war in Ukraine.
The protests have prompted Moscow authorities to warn anyone organising or participating in the protests could face up to 15 years imprisonment. The unrest comes just hours after the Russian President ordered a partial military mobilisation of reserved forces in Ukraine.

The partial mobilisation means 300,000 military reservists - but not conscripts - will be called up to bolster Russia's forces in Ukraine. "We are talking about partial mobilisation, that is, only citizens who are currently in the reserve will be subject to conscription, and above all, those who served in the armed forces and have a certain military specialty and relevant experience," Putin said during the televised address. "I shall stress that Russian citizens called up as part of mobilisation will be given all the benefits of those serving under contract."
