Massive protests over housing affordability in Spain; More details about the driver who crashed into a crowd of Newcastle Knights fans; Gold Coast win their first AFLW clash against Brisbane Lions. More details about the driver who crashed into a crowd of Newcastle Knights fans. Tens of thousands of protesters across Spanish cities are demanding help for renters after lawmakers rejected emergency measures to ease housing affordability.

In Valencia, police used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse protesters, as demonstrators in Barcelona called for a general strike. The unrest was triggered by the eviction of an 87-year-old woman from her home of seven decades in downtown Madrid. Around 1,000 protesters are camping in the city's centre, saying they won't leave until the government takes steps to protect tenants.

"Now is the time when citizens really need to take to the streets and demand a fundamental right that is reflected in the Constitution, the right to decent housing. I know we need to put an end to this situation, and now more than ever, people need to take to the streets to fight.

"An 18-year-old P-plate driver who crashed a BMW into a crowd of Newcastle Knights supporters, injuring ten people yesterday, was known to police. The male driver has been refused bail after being charged with nine offences, including dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm. A five-year-old girl who was in a critical condition yesterday is now serious but stable, along with a 67-year-old man. New South Wales Police Assistant Commissioner David Waddell gave an update to the Nine Network.

"We certainly knew of him. Yesterday's actions are the really irresponsible actions of an 18-year-old inexperienced driver, and it could have been a lot worse than what it was, and we are very grateful that our people in hospital have improved today. What should be a weekend of celebrations has unfortunately ended in some tragedy.

"Two teens have been charged over a spate of armed robberies in Melbourne's south-eastern suburbs on Friday night. Police allege a group of armed offenders in a stolen Toyota Prado stole cash and goods from three liquor stores, a tobacco shop and a fast-food outlet in Cranbourne, Narre Warren and Berwick before being pursued by police early Saturday morning.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers says the government is not anticipating a recession in Australia, even as the war in the Middle East drags on. Speaking to ABC Insider's program, Mr Chalmers said the conflict has put substantial pressure on inflation around the world, and has been disastrous for the cost of living. The government is under increasing pressure to reduce inflation, after the Reserve Bank cited it as the major factor in their decision to lift interest rates again on Tuesday.

Despite the war's impact on fuel and goods prices, Mr Chalmers says the government expects the economy will keep growing, even if that growth slows.

"We're not anticipating a recession here. If you look at the forecasts from the Reserve Bank, and we'll update the Treasury forecast in the mid-year update towards the end of the year, we're not anticipating that here in Australia, but certainly it is weighing on global growth, and we're not immune from that. ”Russia is warning foreigners and diplomats to leave the Ukrainian capital amid fears of further strikes on critical and civilian infrastructure.

The statement by the foreign ministry also vows to continue attacks on military and government infrastructure. Russian forces have recently escalated strikes on infrastructure in Kyiv, hitting ‌a bridge across the Dnipro River in an air attack on Saturday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warns that intelligence shows Moscow is planning attacks on a much broader range of civilian targets ahead of winter. And in the AFLW, Gold Coast have achieved their first win against fellow Queenslanders the Brisbane Lions.

The Suns scored 22 unanswered points in the final quarter at Springfield to score a 40 to 32 victory and secure a fifth-straight win. They moved up to fourth, while the Lions' fourth successive loss left them in danger of missing the finals. Sign up now for daily news from Australia and around the world.
