Proviso Teachers Union rejected the district’s proposed one-week “cooling off” period. The next bargaining session is set for Thursday.
Striking teachers at Proviso High School District 209 were back on the picket line Tuesday, as classes were canceled for a seventh day for the 4,200 students enrolled at the district’s three high schools.
“Under this ‘cooling off’ proposal, our students would have been the winners and neither side would have lost,” Alexander said. “We are disappointed that the union refused to consider this option, even knowing that a continued strike will only further disadvantage our students after almost two years of learning loss due to the COVID-19 global pandemic.”
“Proviso Township District 209 has the lowest teacher retention rate — 82% — lowest starting pay, and lowest average salary in the area,” PTU officials said in a Tuesday statement. According to union officials, the district “received $94 million in revenue this year and banked a budget surplus of $14 million last year,” and “are on track to bank an additional $8 to $12 million this year.”
