Classes were canceled Friday for the roughly 4,200 students at Proviso's three high schools after a final attempt Thursday to avert a strike was unsuccessful.
After months of stalled contract negotiations, Proviso High School District 209 teachers hit the picket line Friday morning, demanding better compensation and smaller class sizes, which they say are integral to recruiting and retaining educators at the district’s three high schools.
District 209 Superintendent James Henderson and the school board “have stalled the bargaining process” and “refused to compromise on critical issues,” Riley said. “We question the union’s intent to bargain in good faith, given that in the counterproposal presented to the district today, they moved backward and increased their salary demands by more than $300,000,” Alexander said.
