The breach in PSNI security which has meant every serving officer and member of staff has had data compromised was down to 'human error', a senior officer has said tonight
The breach of PSNI security must result in immediate action as the leaking of officers' private details is a "profound concern", the former justice minister Naomi Long said tonight. The data and information in relation to thousands of officers was mistakenly divulged in a case of “human error”.Assistant Chief Constable Chris Todd tonight apologised to officers over a major data breach saying: “This is unacceptable.
“We’ve identified some steps that we can take to ensure that it doesn’t happen again. It is regrettable but it is simple human error. “So, what was within that data was the surname, initial, the rank or grade, the location and the departments for each of our current employees across the police service.”
“The information was taken down very quickly, but nevertheless, I do appreciate the concern, of course we will seek to find the extent to which that has been viewed. “Immediate action must be taken to offer them proper information, support, guidance and necessary reassurances regarding their and their families’ security.
Mr Kelly is insisting an urgent inquiry is required and wants to hear from the Chief Constable and his senior colleagues the steps they intend taking to limit the damage to protect identities. “We have many colleagues who do everything possible to protect their police roles. We’re fortunate that the PSNI spreadsheet didn’t contain officer and staff home addresses, otherwise we would be facing a potentially calamitous situation.
“It is imperative that officers, staff and their families and friends understand how seriously this breach is being taken, and that the board is determined to fulfil its oversight and challenge functions appropriately,” he said.
