Public and Catholic school teachers in New South Wales have announced unprecedented joint strike action in response to “uncompetitive” salaries and staff shortages.

Public and Catholic school teachers in NSW have announced unprecedented joint strike action in response to “uncompetitive” salaries and staff shortages.

The Independent Education Union met the NSW Teachers Federation on Tuesday as the state budget was handed down and concluded the Perrottet Government “had its head in the sand” over the teachers’ “crisis”.“We are standing shoulder-to shoulder because fixing the education crisis in NSW demands no less,” he said.

About 2800 schools will be affected across Sydney and regional areas, including 550 Catholic diocesan schools in the NSW and the ACT and 2200 public schools in NSW. However, unions protested it would still see real wages go backwards with inflation surpassing 5 per cent. “Acting on uncompetitive salaries and unsustainable workloads is the only way to stop more teachers leaving and attract the people into the profession we need to fix the shortages,” he said.“We asked the Premier to reconsider his decision to cap the pay of teachers at three per cent when inflation is more than five per cent and rising. Yet, he did nothing.”

Director of Catholic Education, Ross Fox, said teachers deserved a meaningful pay rise but “ultimately our schools rely on government funding and fees from parents to operate”.
