Journalist Peter Greste says at some point public pressure will be crucial if Australian Journalist Cheng Lei’s detainment situation in China is to be resolved.
Ms Cheng worked as an anchor at a Chinese state-owned broadcast channel CGTN and was recently placed under residential detention after eight years of service at the English-speaking news channel. “There does come a point where public pressure is really crucial,” Mr Greste told Sky News host Peta Credlin.
“What you end up doing is not only putting pressure on the authorities that are holding Cheng Lei. “You’re also putting pressure on the Australian diplomats and politicians not only to prioritise the case but to give them the capacity to say to their counterparts that 'listen we’re under pressure it’s very difficult for us to normalise our relationship with you until we resolve this matter'.
