Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced public servants who are taking time off to fight fires will be entitled to additional leave, on top of their existing entitlements, from today. "With bushfire seasons starting earlier, one of the things I've heard on the ground is that some people are dipping into their other leave entitlements to stay out there battling blazes," Mr Morrison said while touring fire regions in South Australia.
He said the announcement of additional paid leave will help firefighters "focused on the job at hand". The comments come as the Commissioner of the New South Wales Rural Fire Service Shane Fitzsimmons strongly rejected the need for more financial compensation for their firefighting efforts.
