Federal public servants have won back their right to work on Australia Day, reversing an order from the Morrison government.
Federal public servants will continue to have the choice whether to work on Australia Day after public service minister Katy Gallagher reversed an order from the previous government.
But just before the caretaker election period began in April last year, the previous government issued an order requiring public servants to observe the Australia Day holiday on January 26 and the Queen’s [now King’s] birthday as part of any future enterprise agreements. “In people’s enterprise agreements in the APS, there’s been the ability for many years to substitute days based on operational requirements in consultation with your managers.”
“Most APS enterprise agreements contain provisions for APS employees to request substitution of a specific public holiday, where agreed between an employee and their manager or agency head.
