Ann Telnaes, a Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist for the Washington Post, resigned after the newspaper declined to publish a satirical cartoon depicting Jeff Bezos and other tech and media CEOs kneeling before Donald Trump. The newspaper defended its decision, citing prior publications on the same topic, while Telnaes argued that the rejection was unprecedented and damaging to press freedom.
Ann Telnaes, the Pulitzer prize-winning editorial cartoon ist for the Washington Post , has resigned after the newspaper refused to publish a satirical cartoon depicting Jeff Bezos , along with other media and technology barons, kneeling before Donald Trump as he prepares for a second US presidency. Telnaes claimed the decision was unprecedented in her experience, stating that while she had received editorial feedback on her work, no cartoons had ever been rejected due to their subject matter.
David Shipley, the Post's opinions editor, defended the newspaper's decision, stating that he disagreed with Telnaes' interpretation of events and that the only bias was against repetition. He explained that the decision stemmed from the newspaper having recently published a column on the same topic and scheduling another satirical column for publication. Telnaes, in her Substack post, shared a rough draft of her cartoon, which depicted Bezos, Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg, and other tech and media CEOs kneeling before Trump. She asserted that the cartoon criticized these billionaires for their efforts to appease Trump. While acknowledging that editorial page editors sometimes object to visual metaphors in cartoons, Telnaes emphasized that this was not the case with her work, stating that the rejection was a 'gamechanger' and dangerous for a free press
