A truckload of books has been taken away under plans to reduce shelving at Melbourne’s City Library and replace it with meeting spaces.

A truckload of books has been taken away to be pulped under plans to reduce shelving at the City Library in Melbourne’s CBD and replace it with meeting spaces.

The council said it had analysed feedback and borrowing trends to cull the collection, with unwanted books dispersed across the library network, donated, or recycled. The reduction of books at the City Library comes after the council opened a new three-storey library, narrm ngarrgu, at the Queen Victoria Market in November. The new library has about 30,000 books.

“I don’t know if they’ll be doing a book sale, they might not want to draw attention to what they’re getting rid of,” she said.
