Expecting to need another water source by the end of next decade, Canberra's water authority is considering whether the city will need to supplement the drinking water supply with purified treated sewage water in the future.

In the next decade Canberra 's water authorities expect to need another water source to keep up with demand from a growing population and the impacts of climate change. Canberra 's water authority is considering supplementing the city's drinking water supply with purified treated sewage water by the end of 2040.

Canberra's water is sourced from the Corin, Bendora, Cotter and Googong dams and the Murrumbidgee River. "In terms of purified recycled water for drinking, that involves a multi-step process that is used to treat and purify the water before it meets stringent standards for drinking," Ms McCormick said.Multiple cities already using recycled waterAmong them is the Western Corridor Recycled Water Scheme in South East Queensland sends treated waste water to treatment plants in and around Brisbane, where it's filtered and passed through a number of purification processes.

The Lower Molonglo Water Quality Control Centre is the ACT's main wastewater treatment plant, and the largest inland treatment facility in Australia."Having said that, they've also told us that they would like to hear more information, and they've taken confidence from the fact that there's already 35 cities around the world that are using purified recycled water," Ms McCormick said.

"The more we think about the degradation that's caused by taking water — the better we'll manage them.
