A campaign to get the Newport Railway Works on the UNESCO World Heritage List has been green lit by a local council.

Hobsons Bay Council have voted to campaign for the heritage-listed Newport Railway Works site to get a place on the UNESCO world heritage list.

Hobsons Bay Councillor Peter Hemphill has previously criticised VicTrack for removing heritage stock and attempting to remove a one-of-a-kind ‘garden platform’ from the site.Victoria’s 134-year-old historic Newport rail workshop could soon get global protection if an ambitious push by the Hobsons Bay council to get it listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List is successful.

There are 20 world heritage sites in Australia, with only two located in Victoria: the Budj Bim, a dormant volcano, in south-western Victoria, and the Royal Exhibition Building and Carlton Gardens in Carlton. About 24 hectares of the 134-year-old site, including the old working sheds and some rail tracks, have been under heritage protection since 1994.But in recent years volunteer groups, who care for the 48-hectare site, have taken aim at the state government for trying toHeritage Victoria describes the site as “one of the best surviving 19th century railway workshops in the world, and one of Australia’s most outstanding items of industrial heritage”.
