The graves of Captain Moonlite and James Nesbitt are being considered for the state heritage register, not only for their notoriety as colonial-era criminals, but for their publicly acknowledged same-sex relationship.

The Heritage Council of NSW is looking at placing the graves of two bushrangers on the state heritage registry. The graves of two Australian bushrangers are being considered for the state heritage register, not only for their notoriety as colonial-era criminals, but for their publicly acknowledged same-sex relationship.

Bushranger historian Aidan Phelan said the graves represented a unique insight into the country's past.) Moonlite wrote at least 60 letters which were confiscated and never reached their intended recipients, but they were uncovered in the late 1980s by researchers. Historians believe the relationship continued over the next year as the pair teamed up with other young men to form an outlaw gang. When Nesbitt was killed during a skirmish with police following the Wantabadgery siege, Moonlite reportedly cradled him in his arms and repeatedly kissed his face.

They include Edward Mostyn Webb-Bowen, who died from injuries suffered in the Wantabadgery clash with Moonlite's gang.Former police officer Wes Leseberg, who lives near Gundagai, said those two graves should also be placed on the heritage register alongside those of the outlaws. Mr Phelan said he would like to see more history from colonial Australia given this level of recognition.
