President Vladimir Putin has warned of a tough military response unless the West drops what he calls its “aggressive line” on Ukraine.

Speaking to senior military officials on Tuesday, Mr Putin said Russia had no room to retreat in a showdown with the United States over Ukraine and would develop its army further if provoked.

"If the aggressive line of our Western colleagues continues, we will take adequate military-technical response measures and react harshly to unfriendly steps." Russia has amassed tens of thousands of troops on the border with Ukraine according to US intelligence sources who had said the nation could be prepared for a full-scale invasion by early 2022.

Mr Putin doubled down on military developments in Europe which meant Romania and Poland would soon be capable of launching Tomahawk cruise missiles.
