It is clear now the Putin administration bears all the hallmarks of a troubled fascist state. The war in Ukraine serves only to underline that utterly obvious conclusion, writes strategic policy analyst and former NSW Labor Senator Stephen Loosley.
In fact, it is some 1,800km from start to finish, with the journey made even more difficult if you are behind the wheel of an underpowered, unreliable, cramped and smelly product of the German Democratic Republic known as the “trabbi” .
Dresden had the advantage of being far from the focus of the Western media’s coverage of the Cold War, which was centred on Berlin.And Putin had particular responsibilities. As a matter of fact, Moscow was completely at a loss to know what to do with the crumbling frontiers of its empire in Eastern Europe.
This can be said with certainty, as it was in a recent commentary in The Conversation, which checked off the elements which must reliably be cited as aspects of a fascist state. Diplomacy has been replaced by a determination to dictate events and on the battlefield, few if any international protocols, such as the Geneva Convention, are honoured.
