Russian President Vladimir Putin has offered a carefully worded apology for the downed Azerbaijan Airlines plane which crashed on Christmas Day.

Vladimir Putin has apologised in a rare, carefully worded Kremlin statement over the crash of an Azerbaijan Airline s plane which was downed on Christmas Day by Russia n air defence systems.

Picture: X The statement also appeared to have been altered, with many news outlets having reported Putin apologised for the “tragic incident”, a phrase which has since changed slightly with the redaction of the word “tragic”.

The statement continues, adding an investigation had led to the launch of a criminal case under Russian air transportation and safety law, with two officials from the Prosecutor General’s Office of Azerbaijan travelling to Grozny to work with their Russian counterparts. The pair also discussed the investigation taking place on Kazakhstani soil which would “bring in experts from Russia, Azerbaijan and Brazil” to review flight recorders found at the crash site.
