The Russian leader is settling in for the long haul as he tries to turn his proxy war with the West over Ukraine into a global confrontation, writes Dr. Alexey Muraviev.

Authoritative media reports emerged last week claiming that Ukraine’s primary counter-offensive – initially thought to have been launched in June – had only really begun in the past few days.

Strelkov, a former Soviet security officer, is known for helping Russia annex Crime back in 2014 and for his role in co-ordinating pro-Russian militias in eastern Ukraine. Rather, it is a move to gag the so-called “angry patriots” who until the Wagner’s attempted mutiny were highly critical of the way in which the Kremlin is prosecuting the war with Ukraine.By negotiating terms with Wagner and by arresting Strelkov, the Kremlin is mitigating the risk of a coup and control the political agenda ahead of next year’s election.By bombarding Odessa, Mykolaiv and Ukraine’s ports on the Danube, Putin is escalating the conflict to a new point of no return.

In the meantime, the Russian leader aims to curtail Ukraine’s counter-offensive by attacking the country’s south coast and threatening to invade from the north.
