Vladimir Putin has pulled the pin on his traditional end-of-year news conference amid reports of mounting discontent among Russia’s elite about the prolonged war in Ukraine.

President Putin generally responds to questions from reporters for several hours, answering queries ranging from the state of local-level infrastructure to foreign policy. The President’s annual televised phone in with members of the public – the so-called"Direct Line with Vladimir Putin" – was scrapped in June and has not been held since.
