We caught up with Rutgers defensive back Shaquan Loyal, who is off to a strong start in his first season starting at safety.
It was the best play in a strong start to the season from the Newark native, who is sliding in well to his new role as a starting safety. Along with the interception, Loyal has racked up a sack and nine tackles in 128 snaps, per ProFootballFocus, making a smooth transition from his usual nickelback position last season.
“He’s done very well so far,” head coach Greg Schiano said of Loyal. “He played a lot last year as a nickel. But he’s got a bright future. He just needs to keep chopping every day.”Q: You pick off a pass against Temple for a second year in a row; what is it about them that gets you playing so well? Did it feel like deja-vu?: It definitely felt good. He was throwing balls to the middle and to my side, so I felt it coming. But it was one play. I just took advantage of both opportunities.
