Already a subscriber? The market regulator, prompted by the fall in the airline’s shares, wrote to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission to determine the timeline behind its investigation of Qantas – and whether directors or executives had knowledge of it.

“ASIC is considering the recent fall in the share price of Qantas following a series of media articles and announcements, including the ACCC’s commencement of proceedings,” the regulator wrote, referring to the action brought over the sale of flights which had already been cancelled,The disclosure of ASIC’s inquiries comes as the Qantas board considers whether to pay Mr Joyce lucrative bonuses that he accrued before leaving the airline.

A Qantas spokesman has previously said “the first time this issue crystallised into legal action was when it was announced by the ACCC on August 31”.Sources close to discussions between the airline and the regulator said it was unlikely that the inquiries would proceed into a full investigation.
