France will pull its soldiers out of Niger following a July coup in the West African country, President Emmanuel Macron said on Sunday, dealing a huge blow to French influence and counter-insurgency operations in the Sahel region.
France’s exit, which comes after weeks of pressure from the junta and popular demonstrations, is likely to exacerbate Western concerns over Russia’s expanding influence in Africa. The Russian mercenary force Wagner already present in Niger’s neighbour Mali.

Former Australian prime minister Tony Abbott nominated to Fox Corp BoardFormer Australian prime minister Tony Abbott has been nominated to the board of the Fox News Corporation. The board is undergoing a reshuffle after Fox and News Corp Chair Rupert Murdoch announced he will be stepping back and transitioning to Chairman Emeritus. With two vacancies now on the board, Fox Corp CEO Lachlan Murdoch has welcomed the nominations of former Australian prime minister Tony Abbott and Magic Leap CEO Peggy Johnson. The nominations will need to be formalised at the annual general meeting of Fox Corp’s board in November 2023. Lachlan Murdoch has also thanked Aragon CEO Anne Dias and business executive Jacques Nasser for their “invaluable contributions” to the board and to Fox.
