OPINION: Qantas-bashing keeps the national carrier on its toes. But in fact Australia’s airlines aren’t doing too badly relative to other countries.
It has little to do with local conditions. Everyone’s short of staff as demand spikes. But there’s a lot of difference between waiting in line for an extra 10 minutes for your morning coffee because the café can’t get enough staff, and having a flight cancelled for the same reason.imposed on it, among other things for on-time arrivals and departures – so-called on-time performance, OTP.
But Qantas-bashing can be a healthy exercise. Domestically, the airline occupies 70 per cent of the market, making it a big target. So more can go wrong. Where it’s justified, criticism keeps the airline on its toes, although, with a dozen or so unions to deal with and a brutal competitive environment, agendas aren’t always as straightforward as they might seem.
The bad news is lower seat numbers convert to higher prices. With demand soaring in the US, airfares for the July peak season are up nearly 20 per cent on 2019 levels, as aircraft are filled to the brim. We can expect a diluted version of that to happen here too, although the cost of fuel will be the main cause.Rectifying the short-term problems is also potentially going to mean adding to staff costs, as our low unemployment rate drives up pay at competing jobs.
