Qantas is looking to take over routes lost due to Air Vanuatu’s demise with the Aussie carrier applying to the International Air Services Commission to operate up to five flights a week to Port Vila.

“There are a number of airlines exploring plans to operate new flights or increase services between Australia and Vanuatu, including Qantas and Jetstar,” the spokesperson said.Currently, Virgin Australia is the only carrier connecting Australia and Vanuatu after the Pacific nation’s national carrier entered voluntary liquidation.
At the start of May, the Pacific carrier cancelled all flights and appointed Earnst and Young to examine the shareholder’s financial position amid financial troubles for the airline. Air Vanuatu accrued about $110 million of debt and had little assets to sell off to facilitate a possible return for the airline.
