Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce has said the airline has lost more than $7 billion and lost revenue more than $25 billion since the start of the pandemic. The losses during that period have counteracted the profits made in the five years prior, he said.

Since flights have started ramping up, Joyce said revenue intake for leisure travel is now around 125 per cent of pre-COVID levels. For business travel, it’s at 90 per cent. The mishandled bags rate reached 11 in every 1000 in July, but it’s has since dropped to six in every 1000. Joyce says the mishandle rate is expected to revert back to pre-COVID levels in September.

Joyce conceded that Qantas has struggled to handle the rebound in travel demand due to the labour shortage in the aviation sector. “It was incredibly tough on our people and deeply frustrating for our passengers. It simply wasn’t good enough and for that we have apologise.”
