When Jetstar chief Gareth Evans steps down from Qantas’ budget offshoot in the new year, he will become the fourth succession candidate in six years to depart.
Ms Wirth is an experienced public affairs executive and has spent the last 13 years occupying various roles at Qantas. She was elevated to chief customer officer in November 2017, and soon after became the chief of Qantas Loyalty.
Ms Hudson’s main claim for the top job will stem from her savvy stewardship of Qantas’ financials amid the near-existential pandemic crisis. Ms Wirth and Ms Hudson have solid claims for the top job, and the fact that they are women will play well given the company’s focus on diversity. Yet there is also a significant gap in their work experience.
