Qantas has indefinitely suspended direct flights between Alice Springs and Melbourne due to rising costs and falling demand, while also limiting its Darwin-Singapore route to peak tourist seasons. The airline apologised to customers and highlighted the economic challenges of sustaining remote routes. Aviation analyst Bruce Dale discussed the financial burden on carriers and the need for realistic expectations and potential government support.
Qantas has announced the indefinite suspension of its direct flight service between Alice Springs and Melbourne, citing rising operational costs and insufficient passenger demand as the primary reasons.
Alongside this, the airline will restrict its Darwin to Singapore route to peak tourist seasons only, pausing operations from late October through June 2027. The decision reflects broader challenges faced by carriers serving remote Australian territories, where maintaining commercially viable services is increasingly difficult. Qantas Domestic Executive Markus Svensson apologised to affected customers and noted that alternative connections via Sydney and Adelaide will remain available for Alice Springs passengers.
He emphasised that despite recent efforts-including deploying a fuel-efficient Airbus A220 aircraft and offering promotional fares as low as $199 one-way-the route could not be sustained. A new Saturday service between Alice Springs and Sydney will be added, expanding that corridor to daily flights. Aviation analyst Bruce Dale described the cancellation of the Alice Springs-Melbourne route as a significant loss for a service that had operated for decades, while acknowledging the economic realities of flying in the Northern Territory.
Dale estimated that airlines collectively spend around $1 billion annually on routes to and within the Territory, many of which operate at a loss when aircraft fly with low occupancy. The tension between private enterprise viability and potential government subsidies was highlighted, with Dale noting that half-empty flights can cost airlines millions per year.
He expressed personal disappointment over the Darwin-Singapore reduction but recognised that other carriers continue year-round service, underscoring the need for a coordinated territorial strategy to boost low-season tourism. The changes illustrate the fragile economics of regional aviation in Australia's remote areas and the trade-offs airlines must make to remain profitable in the face of persistent demand shortfalls
