The “disheartening and concerning” death of a second worker at a north Queensland coal mine has sparked a pause on operations. The man, reported to be aged 56, died when a haul truck ran over a smaller vehicle at QCoal’s Byerwen site at Suttor, west of Mackay, on Thursday about 1pm. He died at the scene, less than three weeks after the death of experienced worker and father-of-five Chris Schloss, 48, in what was believed to have been an accident with a crane.
“We haven’t ruled out further action so our inspectors will continue to assess the site in the coming days. “It’s disheartening and concerning to see a second fatality in less than a month at Byerwen.” The regulator would conduct a “thorough investigation” before “taking appropriate action”, Djukic said. The latest death had traumatised workers, said the Mining and Energy Union, which called for the mine to cease operations immediately and support the workforce.
