Qld COVID restrictions to ease at the end of month, nine more deaths on Friday

Queensland has recorded nine more deaths from COVID-19, as Premier Annastacia Palaszczsuk confirmed the state would ease some restrictions at the end of the month. The Premier confirmed that she would be looking to ease restrictions at the end of February, following a steady decline in the number of cases and hospitalisations in the state.

“I will be meeting with [Chief Health Officer] John Gerrard before the end of the month to discuss that,” she said.Dr Gerrard said there was no doubt that Queensland had performed significantly better in terms of hospitalisations and deaths than modelling had suggested heading into the wave, a development he credited to widespread vaccination.

“Widescale vaccination before we experienced the wave is what has meant Queensland has coped well with this wave of the pandemic,” he said. Of the nine deaths recorded on Friday, six were people in their 70s, two were in their 80s and one was in their 90s. Six were aged care residents.Of the eligible population, 62.64 per cent have had a booster shot, considered essential in maintaining their level of protection against the virus.
