Queensland-made COVID vaccine clamp rises from ashes to meet new virus threat

Queensland scientists have developed a vaccine technology set to be put through its paces in human trials after the first version suffered a stumble at the final hurdle.

The vaccine did not give patients HIV, but triggered a reaction in screening tests, which would have rendered Australia’s HIV screening programs useless if the vaccine was rolled out widely. Chappell said Clamp2 performed as well as the initial version, and would be put through its paces in a clinical trial versus the Novovax vaccine, scheduled for March. The trial will use 70 patients, 35 for each vaccine, to compare how well the clamp technology works when used against COVID-19.

“But in the long-term view this is about pandemic preparedness – safeguarding our region of the world against what’s to come next.” Dr Melanie Saville from CEPI, said they had shown “true grit” to dust themselves off and develop Clamp2.
