The revelation, which has reignited calls for the “torture devices” to be banned, follows a 2016 claim by then attorney-general Yvette D’Ath that the hoods were “not used” in Queensland.

Police have used spit hoods on 20 young people in Queensland watchhouses since 2015 – up to as recently as six months ago.

Asked by the Greens’ Maiwar MP, Michael Berkman, during an estimates hearing on Wednesday about their use on 10 to 17-year-olds, Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll said this had not occurred in the past six or seven months.“[We’re] working very closely with the Children’s Commissioner to make sure that in the future, we have other options rather than that,” she said, adding their use was “interestingly” only allowed in watchhouses.

While confirming earlier this year that they could still use the devices, Queensland police did not provide figures at that time.
